Sometimes the best route to safety leads through the middle of Hell
Major Alex Frey is no stranger to the wilds of the African jungle, and as darkness grows across the globe, a small light shines in the depths of the African wilderness.
Freshly in charge, Major Frey finds himself beset by a tumultuous situation in Zambia. He must guide and protect the servicemen and women of the United States Embassy. When the lights go out on Christmas Day, a gutsy decision must be made. With the help of some unlikely and untested soldiers, they must convoy through the perilous wilds of Africa as they escape to Rwanda by any means possible.
Unbeknownst to Major Frey, memories he has paid for in blood will haunt and hound him, leading to ambushes and showdowns with deadly enemies and environments. If the Major can overcome treacherous obstacles and come to terms with his past, he might just survive the 1400-mile journey.

The maturity of the writing makes it hard to believe this is the first novel by Philip Voodoo. Though placed against the backdrop of WWIII in the Mongol Moon universe, the story isn’t simply a military action driven narrative. The characters are fully fleshed out, the pacing and suspense is balanced, and the description and dialog is just right, to the point the reader can almost smell the Congo. The cat and mouse plot pulls the reader intimately into the story, vicariously feeling what the characters are experiencing, without the author ever hitting a false note. For a writer heretofore known for excellent short stories and essays, this piece is evidence that his talent shows its true strength in a novel length story. I can understand now why people who’ve read this book are already asking for a sequel. This tale will haunt long after the book is finished.
Voodoo always does this thing where you learn a lot but are so captivated by the story he's telling the lessons learned become a part of the tale. I've never been to Africa but the pictures painted in Blood Memory make it as foreign seeming to this Texan as the surface of some alien planet at the edge of the galaxy. Take a step down from the top of the food chain and enjoy the chase.
